An important thought for writers:

People ask for criticism, but they only want praise.

Not me, EM – When I ask for criticism I mean it – How else can I improve my writing? Can you explain what is meant by writer’s “Point Of View” – and why it is so undesirable in today’s literature.

Tell Maugham, next time you see ‘im, that it should be “want only criticism” not “only want criticism.”

Right you are! I hesitated to post the quote because of the misplaced “only.” However, I decided that the problem of writers not wanting honest evaluations (I have come across three or four in my years of editing) was important enough to forgive Mr. Maugham his grammatical lapse.

You are right on this…I do it a lot…tell people to read my writing and critique it, but I want them to tell me it’s good….

I ask for criticism and I want only criticism. Seriously, the praise is lovely and builds the confidence but criticism will help me grow as a writer.

    Hahaha
Too true! I ask for “constructive criticism” but get my feelings hurt when people want to change what I’ve written.

Thank you guys for pointing out the improper placement of the word, “only.” It has been topping my pet peeve list lately.

Mum, perhaps you should do a Grammar Guru post about it.
