What Is a Good Prayer?

What seem our worst prayers may really be, in God’s eyes, our best. Those, I mean, which are least supported by devotional feeling. For these may come from a deeper level than feeling. God sometimes seems to speak to us most intimately when he catches us, as it were, off our guard.

I’ve noticed prayers with a lot of cuss words get the big guy’s attention. I’ve never gotten the idea that it was in a bad way either. It just seems like the more immediate the need, or the more emotional the situation, the more real the response seems to be.

The best prayer is an honest one. I get irritated at myself sometimes. I cuss and fume over a situation with my wife. Then I pray about trying to sound grateful when there ain’t an ounce of gratitude in my heart. Like God is stupid or something.

Editormum – The best prayers are when we are so upset that we do not know what to say, when we can only groan or cry, because God promised that when we have no words his Spirit will pray for us. And I’m sure that God’s words are greater than anything I could ever think to say.
